What is SAP RISE?

At iTrain we have noted that more clients are using RISE with SAP; it reflects a growing shift towards increased confidence in SAP’s cloud transformation methodology. This emerging trend isn’t a big surprise. RISE with SAP promises a streamlined path to the cloud for SAP systems. It bundles software, services, and support into one package. It’s a logical path, defined by SAP so, for many, the logical choice. In this article, we outline what RISE with SAP entails. We also share iTrain’s insights on how to ensure effective training under this new methodology.

What Is RISE with SAP?

RISE with SAP is often described as SAP’s “business transformation as a service” solution. It is more than just an ERP upgrade. It’s an all-in-one offering. It helps organisations transition their on-premise SAP ERP systems into the cloud on their own terms. In essence, RISE with SAP bundles all the critical components needed for a successful digital transformation. This includes the software (think SAP S/4HANA Cloud), cloud infrastructure, tools, and advisory services. Everything is provided under a single contract managed by SAP. This approach removes much of the complexity of dealing with multiple vendors. As a result, companies get one cohesive package. It includes everything from technical migration tools to business process intelligence. Each element is designed to simplify and accelerate the move to an intelligent enterprise.

Flexibility and continuous innovation are at the heart of RISE with SAP. Businesses can choose their preferred cloud infrastructure, whether SAP’s own cloud or a hyperscaler of their choice. Either way, SAP remains responsible for overseeing the SLA and system operations. The package also includes access to SAP’s Business Technology Platform services and business network integrations. This ensures that as your company evolves, your systems can adapt easily. Additionally, RISE with SAP often results in a lower total cost of ownership. For example, SAP reports that customers can achieve significantly lower total cost of ownership (TCO) with RISE. In fact, some estimates show up to 20% lower TCO over five years compared to on-premise ERP. This cost efficiency, combined with the agility of cloud updates, makes RISE an attractive choice. In fact, many enterprises see it as a way to future-proof their SAP investments.

Why Are Organisations Embracing RISE with SAP?

Many organisations, including iTrain clients, are embracing RISE with SAP. It is a compelling solution to address key business needs. A key driver for many of our clients is its promise to offer a faster time to value. RISE provides a guided journey with pre-defined best practices. Companies can transform their ERP processes more quickly when compared to a traditional do-it-yourself migration.

Secondly, RISE reduces complexity. Instead of juggling separate licenses for software, hosting, and support, everything is consolidated. This “concierge service” style, common for many service offerings across our organisations, and now an approach available for S/4 transformation which will deliver fewer headaches and, for some, a clearer roadmap to cloud success.

Moreover, RISE with SAP puts a disciplined, strong emphasis on business process improvement. Tools like SAP Signavio (for process analysis) help organisations optimise and standardise their processes as they migrate. In other words, it’s not just a technical upgrade. Companies also refine their operations by adopting SAP’s best practices during the move. This alignment with best practices can lead to more efficient operations and easier adoption of new features.

Finally, the all-in-one nature of RISE with SAP can provide companies more confidence. SAP and its partners offer expert guidance at each stage, from initial assessment (Discover phase) to go-live and beyond. Knowing that SAP is closely involved at every step can provide some organisations another level of assurance. There are defined quality gates and checkpoints in the RISE methodology. This structured approach means project teams can trust they’re following a proven path. It’s a tailored journey, with the safety net of SAP’s experience. All these factors have driven the popularity of RISE with SAP. Even established SAP customers are using it to leap into the cloud era with a more mitigated level of risk.

The Importance of Effective Training in RISE with SAP Projects

Adopting RISE with SAP is not just a technical migration; it is a significant change for the entire organisation. SAP itself describes RISE with SAP as “much more than an IT offering.” It positions it as a holistic business transformation that could affect everyone involved. That is why effective training and change management are absolutely critical. Technology alone does not guarantee success; people do. Project teams, end users, and stakeholders all need to be prepared for new processes and tools. If users do not understand the changes or how to work with the new system, they could struggle. In that case, the expected business benefits of the project may not be achieved.

Effective training in the context of RISE with SAP has several dimensions. First, project teams (including IT staff, key business users, and implementation partners) should be enabled early. These teams need to understand SAP’s cloud-centric processes and the Activate methodology that SAP claims underpins RISE projects. When the implementation team is well-trained, they are better able to configure and tailor the system appropriately. This alignment can help ensure the solution reflects both SAP best practices and the company’s specific needs.

Next, end-user training is paramount. RISE often involves moving to SAP S/4HANA (cloud edition) and possibly adopting Fiori interfaces or new workflows. Even if the core functionality is similar to legacy SAP, the user interface and task execution can differ. Employees need to learn the new system in the context of their daily work. Traditional generic training (simply showing features out of context) is not enough here. In order for RISE projects to succeed, training should be role-based and scenario-based. For example, a procurement clerk should learn how to create purchase orders in the new S/4HANA Cloud system. They should also know how to approve invoices using the Fiori apps they will use daily. This practical, relevant training can help users confidently apply what they learn.

Moreover, we find that blended learning approaches work well during such transformations. Combining e-learning modules, live instructor-led sessions, and hands-on practice often improves retention. E-learning (such as short video tutorials or interactive simulations) provides flexibility for users to learn at their own pace. Instructor-led Training (ILT) allows for live Q&A and deeper discussion of specific company scenarios. Blending these methods helps keep training engaging and accessible. This approach is especially valuable when hundreds or thousands of users need to be upskilled.

It is also important to leverage modern tools. RISE with SAP includes access to SAP’s Learning Hub and in-app learning via SAP Enable Now (the Web Assistant). SAP are advertising that these tools provide on-demand help and guided tours within the software, which can reinforce formal training. At iTrain, we often incorporate SAP Enable Now content to give users help in the flow of work. This means they get just-in-time guidance at the moment they need it.

Finally, an effective training strategy under RISE with SAP should be continuous. The go-live of the new system is not the end of learning. SAP promotes RISE as a model that encourages continuous innovation through frequent cloud updates and new features. Therefore, organisations should foster a culture of ongoing learning. Short refresher courses, update briefings, and a well-maintained library of learning resources can help keep skills current. In short, well-planned training can significantly increase the likelihood of a successful RISE with SAP project. It can turn employees into engaged adopters of the new system.

iTrain’s Approach to Ensuring RISE Training Success

Implementing a programme like RISE with SAP is a complex journey. However, iTrain believes that with the right training approach, this journey can be much smoother. We have seen firsthand that when users feel prepared and supported, their confidence grows. The organisation can also realise the value of its investment more quickly. Our approach to RISE with SAP training revolves around a few core principles:

1. Early Engagement and Planning:
iTrain works with clients from the very start of a RISE project, designing a training plan aligned with the project timeline. We conduct training needs analysis to identify which roles will change and what skills gaps exist. Starting early means training is not an afterthought, it progresses alongside the technical implementation. This way, by the time the system is ready, the people are ready too.

2. Role-Based, Customised Learning:
As with any SAP rollout, we emphasise role-based training for RISE projects. Generic “one-size-fits-all” sessions are replaced with tailored content for each department and job role. Users learn exactly what they need for their role, in the new system’s context. This approach keeps training relevant and avoids overwhelming learners with features they will not use. It focuses instead on deepening competence in the transactions and processes they will manage.

3. Blended Delivery Methods:
Our trainers use a mix of delivery formats to suit different learning preferences and maximise reach. Interactive e-learning modules, video tutorials, and webinars provide flexible self-paced learning. At the same time, we run live virtual or classroom workshops for hands-on practice. During RISE training rollouts, we often use sandbox systems so learners can practise safely. Mistakes become lessons rather than disruptions. We also encourage “power users” or champions to attend advanced train-the-trainer sessions to support colleagues during and after go-live.

4. Change Management Integration:
iTrain’s methodology links training with change management. With RISE projects, change impacts can be significant, from new processes to role adjustments. We work with clients to communicate these changes clearly and highlight potential benefits. When employees understand why the change is happening and how it could help them, they are more likely to engage. Workshops and feedback sessions help address concerns early, ensuring that users are prepared both technically and mentally.

5. Post-Go-Live Support and Continuous Learning:
Effective training does not end at deployment. iTrain supports clients through the go-live period, providing floor support and help desks. We gather user feedback to identify gaps and deliver targeted refreshers.

By following these principles, iTrain helps companies transform their workforce alongside their technology. The result is a smoother implementation with fewer issues at go-live, and a team of empowered users who can drive real value from the new SAP environment.
