Your Training Solutions for Oracle APEX, OBIEE & Discoverer
iTrain offers a wide range of training courses across Oracle’s BI and data warehousing technologies. From “boot camps” that teach you the basics of a product across five intensive days, to sets of courses that take delegates step by step through a complete product learning path, our training courses equip you and your team to deliver effective Oracle BI and Data Warehousing projects.
Oracle Business Intelligence 11g Enterprise Edition courses involves theory and hands-on practical using step-by-step instructions on how to perform a variety of tasks and exercises. Because the step-by-step solutions are built for practical real world applications, not only is knowledge gained through valuable hands-on experience, but also the solutions presented may then be used as the foundation for production implementation, dramatically reducing time to deployment.
We deliver our courses at one of our training centers or onsite for client development teams, ensuring the advice and techniques you learn from us are based on experience. In addition, as we develop our own course materials and consult when we’re not delivering courses, we can also customize the content to meet your particular needs and requirements.
Oracle Application Express (Oracle APEX, previously named Oracle HTML DB) is a software development environment running inside the Oracle database. Oracle Application Express is free of charge and can be run inside Oracle Database Express Edition (also free product). During installation of Oracle Database Express Edition, Oracle APEX is installed by default, however Oracle APEX can be installed in any other Oracle Database Editions for free. If Oracle APEX is running inside Oracle Database Express Edition the functionality is limited by limitation of Oracle Database Express Edition ( - e.g. CPU limit or memory limit).
Using only a web browser, an inexperienced programmer can use APEX to build complex web applications from scratch.
A popular application developed in Application Express is the AskTom application developed by Thomas Kyte. Oracle's Metalink support site had been running on APEX, but was eventually replaced by an Oracle ADF version. Oracle's online store also runs on APEX.
Oracle Application Express, previously branded HTML DB, is a rapid web application development tool for the Oracle database. Using a web browser, the developer can create and deploy professional applications that are both fast and secure on an Oracle 10g database, creating reports, charts, forms and menus. The capabilities within Oracle Application Express make development easy via pre-built templates and wizards. Oracle Application Express is a database application. The IDE (Integrated Development Environment), the menus and all of the screens in ApEx are written in PL/SQL. The meta data for all of the screens, reports and menus is stored in tables within the database. When you point your browser at the ApEx URL, the Oracle HTTP listener receives that call and uses PL/SQL and the meta data stored in database tables to render the pages. The sections that follow describe key features of Oracle Application Express.
Oracle Discoverer is a tool-set for ad hoc querying, reporting, data analysis, and Web-publishing for the Oracle Database environment. Oracle Corporation markets it as a business intelligence product. It was originally a stand-alone product, however it has become a component of the Oracle Fusion Middleware suite, and renamed Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer.
Most company databases are extremely complicated and contain millions of records. It is also necessary to understand languages such as SQL (Structured Query Language) to retrieve the necessary data. This makes most tools that access the data and report on it only effective in the hands of expert users.
However, Oracle Discover 10g plus allows data to be viewed, analysed and reported on without expert knowledge of databases or SQL. Therefore Discoverer is not a tool to be programmed by programmers. It is for people that understand their organisation’s data and want to report on it.
Oracle Discoverer 10g has several main features, which are listed below.
• Query information in the database using a variety of criteria.
• Format the information that is retrieved
• Produce reports from the information
• Save queries for future use
• Export results for use with other products
This course will consider the above features and other items in more detail. To allow the end user tool to build advanced reports, without any programming requirements, an administrator has to define all of the default settings in the Administration Edition. Part of this involves creating an area known as the EUL or End User Layer. The EUL is an interpretation layer, which converts the user’s selections into SQL to allow the relevant data to be retrieved.
Oracle 10g Plus is a web enabled version of the Discoverer Desktop 10g tool. Reports built in Discoverer can be more complex and more heavily formatted. These reports can however be stored in the Database and viewed in the 10g End User tool.
There is also another part to the Discoverer 10g plus tool – Oracle Discoverer 10g Viewer, that can simply be used to view reports stored on the database through any browser. This cannot be used to create or edit reports, but is an ideal way to allow anyone to view reports.
Oracle Discoverer Administration:
The EUL is an interpretation layer, which converts the user’s selections into SQL to allow the relevant data to be retrieved.
All of the default settings and data control for different areas of the company are also set up in this EUL by means of building Business Areas in the Administration tool. Statistics on all Discoverer End User activity are also stored to help with the maintenance and management side of things.
Oracle Business intelligence (OBI) is a set of techniques and tools for the transformation of raw data into meaningful and useful information for business analysis purposes.
